East Molesey

Music and family room

The brief

To replace an ugly garage at the bottom of the garden with an elegant looking garden room that fitted the aesthetics of the conservation area but allowed for multiple uses by the whole family. Unusually they wanted a sound-proof music room as our client enjoys playing guitar as well as accommodating a pool table, chill out media zone, kitchenette and lavatory.

The solution

As East Molesey is a designated Conservation Area and the garden had two huge Lime Trees both with tree preservation orders, Paradisi Garden Rooms handled all the necessary applications and discussions with the local authority planning, building and tree conservation teams to secure full permission to build. Trees were protected throughout the build.

In order to compliment the main house and in keeping with the vernacular of the historical nature of the conservation area, Paradisi Garden Rooms designed this beautiful pitched-roof garden room clad in stunning vertical silver larch slatting and grey slate roof tiles. Bi-folding timber doors finished in dark grey completed the stunning look and bring a large amount of light and airiness into the room.

The structure was built using insulated SIPS panels and lined with acoustic plasterboard for sound-proofing to allow our client and his friends to play their instruments late into the evening. An armoured electrical cable was run down to the room along with CAT6 cable to enable internet connection in the garden room. Our client also wanted an air conditioning unit installed so that the room was kept cool in the height of summer and warm in the winter, ensuring the room will get plenty of use all year round.

Internal walls were plastered and finished off in Farrow & Ball Ammonite to compliment the colour of the kitchenette units and LED strip lighting installed in the ceiling. Our client wanted both hot and cold running water as well as a Quooker boiling water tap for that instant cup of coffee. With the family likely to spend lots of time in this highly functional room, a lavatory was a must to avoid frequent trips up and down the garden.

Finishing touches to the outside of the garden room include a small composite deck and stylish up-lighters fixed to the factory-aged larch timber clad walls.
